I am with child!

Well technically only in the photo below but I did decide to sponsor a child through the Centro de Esperanza Infantil. I was so busy rescuing a dog this week and spending ridiculous amounts of money to get her spayed (even though it turns out she was already spayed, oops) that I felt guilty about only volunteering at the Centro and not actually helping by sponsoring a needy child. If I can spend money on a dog I can certainly spend money to help a child go to school!

So meet my goddaughter (that is what they call the sponsored children at the Centro, not my choice of terminology) Lorena Patricia or just Pati for short! She is 5 and really cute! The last of 11 children in an obviously very fertile family. If you are interested in sponsoring a child let me know and I can tell you more about the process. Now when people ask me if I'm going to have children someday I can say I already have a child!



Between the dog and the child I'm now officially broke for the month.

Vida Nueva - Teotitlan del Valle

My mom came to Oaxaca for the month of June and during her last full week in Mexico we went to visit a women's weaving cooperative in Teotitlan del Valle, a village outside of the city of Oaxaca known for its tapetes or rugs. During my stay in Oaxaca in the summer of 2006 I went with my study abroad group to Vida Nueva, a women's co-op of weavers and bought a tapete for my mom. Vida Nueva consists of single women, widows, and single mothers who otherwise might not receive a decent price (or live a decent life) for their weaving in the male-controlled tapete business that dominates Teotitlan. After telling her the story of the cooperative and the women who benefit from it, my mother was eager to visit herself and support this group. How long between posts before Blogger cuts you off?

It has been a long time since I have posted and I do wonder, how long does it take until Blogger boots you off the system for inactivity? I'm defending my dissertation in less than a week and looking for employment, so essentially I have been boring with nothing to post about. Hopefully within a week I will be a Doctor (but one who unfortunately cannot prescribe medicine), and in the next six months I will have some sort of job, then the posting shall resume!

Field Trip Recap: Day 3....Ixtepec and Juchitan

Wake up, take a shower in the prison bathroom, eat (again), and hop into the van for the short drive to Juchitan. There is an accent in the name but I haven't figured out how to do these yet on the keyboards here. We are dropped off in the town center and stroll around the large market, mostly housed in a beautiful, large, white building with numerous arches. The market is great, as usual you can find just about everything under the sun, but here there are some special items not really found anywhere else. There are some very intricate, traditional handwoven dresses in this market, some of them very expensive. They are beautiful and most have lots of brightly colored flowers on a black background. There is also quite a bit of gold jewelry and Oliver tells us that if we look hard enough we might be able to find some jewelry that glorifies gang culture. Sure enough, as we walk through the market Oliver finds a gold necklace with a machine gun pendant! The other market items of note ...
